March 6, 1952 IONIA WOMAN DIES UNEXPECTEDLY AT HOME THURSDAY Mrs. Walter Garrett Found Dead in Bed; Had Heart Ailment Mrs. Walter Garrett, the former Leone Hale, was found dead in bed about 10:00 o'clock Thursday morning, Feb. 28, at her home, 402 Division St., Ionia. Mrs. Garrett was secretary for Henry Welch of the National Farm Loan Association, and when she did not appear at the office at around 8:30, Mr. Welch tried to call her home. Failing to receive an answer, he became alarmed and called neighbors, Miss Ella Ross and Dwight Whipple, who investigated and found her as above stated. She had been receiving treatment from a physician for a heart ailment and Coroner Dale Kauffman stated death was caused by the heart condition. Her death occurred sometime after 5:30, when Mr.Garrett left their home for Grand Rapids and his work with an oil company. Mrs. Garrett, daughter of Frank Hale of Orleans, was born at Orleans in 1898, and was fifty-four years old at the time of her death. Her girlhood was spent in Orleans and for some years she was employed in Jamestown, New York, later at the State Savings Band and Frank's 5c tp $1.00 Store. For the past eight years she had been in the employ of the National Farm Loan Association. She is survived by her husband, Walter; her father Frank Hale and a sister, Mrs. Charles Snyder, of Marshall. Rev. Howard A. Smith officiated at the funeral service held from the First Methodist Church, Ionia, Monday afternoon. Bearers were Henry Welch, Justus Christiansen, Dwight Whipple, Viggo Nielsen, Lynn Morris and Charles O'Leary. Burial was in Tuttle Cemetery.
