Gates was born July 19, 1865 in Assyria, Barry county, Michigan and died July 3, 1912, aged 46 years, 11 months and 14 days, at the home of his cousin and brother, H.P. Hale and Roy M. Gates, at Lakeview. He suffered greatly at the last. His family was with him and helped care for him, during his last sickness, giving him every comfort. The immediate cause of death being Organic heart disease. He was united in marriage to Minnie E. Huston of Lyons June 22, 1891, to this union four children were given, two having died in infancy. He leaves a wife, who has been very devoted and is almost heart- broken, two sons Seth D. of Fenwick and Mark B. of Sheridan, who is with his mother, and two brothers, Dr. Otto B. of Bay City and Roy M. of Lakeview. He spent his boyhood days in Orange township and later was station agent at Lyons, for several years. He was a Christian and formerly was a member of the Lyons Baptist church, a member of the Lyons F.&A.M. Lodge and Chapter and also a Maccabee. He was a member of Co. F. 31st Michigan in the Spanish-American war, but was taken sick with fever at Chickamauga and after some time in the hospital, he was brought home on a stretcher. The many beautiful floral pieces bore silent evidence to the esteem in which he was held. He was a kind husband and devoted father and leaves a large circle of friends to morn their loss. The body was brought here from Lakeview on Friday evening and the friends were met at the train by Rev. D. B. .Davidson and brother Masons and escorted to the home of Wm. Huston, father of Mrs. Gates. Saturday afternoon at 1:30 brief services were held at the house and public services in the auditorium of the Baptist church conducted by Rev. Davidson, who was assisted by Rev. Weaver of Muir. The Masonic lodge had charge of the services. Interment in Lyons cemetery.
