The Ionia County News, Thursday, January 4, 1934

The passing of Mrs. David Gates on Christmas Day, takes another of our old 
residents of the vicinity from us.  She was married to Mr. Gates on December 
23, 1871, going to his home in Berlin township, where they resided until 1909, 
when they moved to Saranac.  Thus their 62 years of married life has been 
spent in or near Saranac.

She had been ill for some time, but before ill health and the years began to 
slow up their energy, Mr. and Mrs. Gates always took an active part in all 
that was for the upbuilding of their community.  She leaves her husband, who 
is past 80 years of age, a son, daughter and four grandsons.
