The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Friday, April 7, 1950

Mrs. Belle Amelia Gates, 79, died Thursday, April 6, at Traverse City.  She 
was born Sept. 5, 1870, in Berlin township, the daughter of Ezra and Ellen 
Howell,  Her husband, Thomas P. Gates, died at the age of 77 years on July 5, 
1948.  

She taught school in Durkee district in Ionia county and in country schools in 
Osceola county.  She spent most of her life in Michigan except for eight years 
in Tennessee and six in Mississippi.  She lived for the last eight years in 
Muir.

Surviving are the son, Orlan, of Pontiac; four grandchildren; and two great-
grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Myers funeral home.  
Dr. J. Lee Lewis will officiate.  Interment will be in Saranac cemetery.
