He was born in 1871 in Berlin township the son of Martha and Clinton Gates. He was a farmer in Berlin for about 50 years and for the last eight years has lived in Muir. He is survived by his wife, Belle; a son, Orlan of Pontiac; two brothers, Mark of Ionia and Roy of Saranac; and three sisters, Mrs. Alva Gaffney and Mrs. Grace Baker of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Blanche Eddy of Saranac. One sister, Mrs. Ruth Butler, is dead. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 17, at 2 p.m. from the Shaw Funeral home in Muir. Interment will be in the Saranac cemetery. The remains will repose in the funeral home until the funeral Saturday.
