The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Tuesday, September 6, 1977


John A. Gates, 94, of 641 North Jackson died Monday evening at the Ionia Manor 
where he had been a resident for the past year.  He was born in Mason November 
24, 1882, the son of George and Mary Link Gates.

He married the former Lurinda Harrington November 24, 1903 in Ionia.  They 
lived on a farm near Marcellus until moving to Ionia in 1923.  She preceded him 
in death August 23, 1958.

While living in Ionia, Mr. Gates was employed as a custodian at Jefferson 
school for 28 years.  After retirement he worked as custodian at First Security 
bank for a few years.  He was a member of Zion United Methodist church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Mabel Fisher of Englewood, Florida; 
Mrs. Arthur (Genevieve) Knickrehm of Marathon Key, Florida and Mrs. Harry 
(Helen) Martin of Ionia; six grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and four 
great-great-grandchildren.  One son preceded him in death.

Services are Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Zion United Methodist church with Rev. 
Nolan Williams officiating.  Burial is in Easton cemetery.

The family will receive friends and relatives at the Leddick funeral home 
Tuesday 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  A memorial fund is 
established for the Zion United Methodist church.
