Ionia Standard, 4 Dec 1896

Mrs. Sophia P. Gates died on Wednesday, Nov. 25.  She was a pioneer resident,
having resided in Ionia over 40 years, and longer in the county.  Her husband,
Freedom Gates, was one of Ionia’s early merchants, and died nearly 40 years ago.
 Deceased was 80 years of age, and was widely known and highly esteemed.  Three
children survive her:  Eleazer E., and Frances, wife of Lucien A. Cornell, both
of this city; and Stafford, of Evart.  Funeral was held at the residence of L.A.
Cornell, at 10:30 Saturday morning; services conducted by Rev. Edward M.
Jeffers, pastor of the Baptist church, of which deceased had been for many years
a consistent member.

[Transcriber's Note:  There is a notation on the obituary card that she was
buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.]
