May 16, 1913 A WELL SPENT LIFE TRIUMPHANT DEATH Mrs. Sybil Gates Beloved and Honored Resident of Lake Odessa and Vicinity Passes Away May 12. After a week of suffering Mrs. Sybil Gates died at her cottage at the Lake Front last Monday evening about sundown. Mrs Gates celebrated her seventy-first birthday with sister Rebekahs last Friday week ago, as was noted in last week's issue, and her illness came on shortly after this pleasant occasion. She had been poorly all winter, only able to get up town when some friend would drive her up or she hire a rig to take her, but the end was not thought so near, as she was so full of energy and cheer. March 31 her daughter and husband Mr. and Mrs Frank Lowrey came from Texas to stay with and care for her until whatever change might take place and it has been a source of great comfort to her to be so well caed for by loving children. Mrs. Gates was loved and revered by the children as well as by older friends, her cottage always being open and her smile ready to greet the young as well as the old. She was an active member of the congregational church the W.C.T.U., the Relief Corps, and the Woman's Literary Club and possessed rare literary talent remarkably well preserved for one of her age. She has had her share of the serious questions of life to solve, but these had softened and refined human nature by her perfect Christian faith and reliance on God until her trust ended in perfect love, and she met her Savior in perfect peace "it is not all of life to live, Nor all of death to die" The funeral was held at the home last Wednesday and was largely attended. The sermon was by Rev. J.W. Prestidge her pastor, the singing by Mesdames Russ, Straus and Dann and the burial was ay Lake Side cemetery.
