The Portland observer, Tuesday, September 17, 1878
Died at her home in this village on the 1st inst., Mrs. Sarah S. Gates, wife 
of E. M. Gates, Esq., aged 67 years.  The deceased was born in the Province of 
Quebec in 1811, her parents removing from there when she was a small child, to 
Vermont.  When about 25 years of age she was married to her now bereaved 
husband, and resided in New York and New England States and Canadas until 
1866, when she removed with her husband to this place.  She has always lived a 
consistent Christian life and died in full faith of a better land beyond.  Mr. 
Gates is left a lonely old man, and to be deprived of the company of her with 
whom he has lived happily for forty-four years is indeed hard, but his 
consolation is to look forward to the time, which cannot be far distant, when 
he will meet his loved one on the bright and shining shore where parting is 
unknown.
