The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Friday, September 9, 1977
Services for John A. Gates, 94, of Ionia, who died Monday evening were 
Thursday afternoon at Zion United Methodist church with Rev. Nolan Williams 
officiating.  Church organist was Mrs. Evelyn Waters with Mr. Gates’ 
granddaughter, Mrs. Lucille Bates as vocalist.  Burial was in Easton cemetery.

Bearers were grandsons, Gerald, Donald and James Martin, Willard Hickock, 
Donald Bates and Walter Gale.  Members of the Bethany class of Zion United 
Methodist church attended services in a group.  Following graveside services 
luncheon was prepared and served in the church dining facility by women of the 
church.
