Kellogg was born in Bloomfield, Ohio, June 22nd, 1833; moved with her parents the following September to Webster, Washtenaw county, Mich., afterwards living in Jackson, Clinton and Barry counties. She was a child of Christian parents and was converted at the age of 18, united with the Free will Baptist church. At the age of 20 she united with the M. E. church in which she was an untiring worker until prevented by sickness, and was a life member of the Michigan Conference Missionary Society, in which she took great interest. She was married June 22nd, 1853 to E. Martin Gates at Castleton, Barry county, afterwards living at Vermontville, Nashville and Collins, with whom she lived happily for nearly 40 years, they having five children, two dying in early childhood, and three living, Archie of Lyons, Otto of Ionia, and Roy, aged 14, who, with the husband, are left to mourn the loss of wife and mother. They moved to their present home in 1884. In all her suffering she was never heard to murmur or complain at her lot, but seemed submissive to the will of the Divine Creator. She was untiring in her efforts to do for others, and many a sick person was made more comfortable through her efforts. She never thought of herself when others’ happiness depended upon her doing for them. In her home she was ever loving and cheerful, always showing forth the spirit of the Master above. She was a faithful Christian, a devoted wife and loving mother, and departed this life November 18th, 1892, aged 59 years, 4 months and 27 days. Funeral services were held at the Lyons M. E. church and her remains laid at rest in the Lyons cemetery.
