(Maude) Gates, 70, of Orange township died Saturday at 10:45 a.m. at the University hospital, Ann Arbor, after being a patient for the past ten days. She was born March 5, 1880, in North Shade township, Gratiot county. She moved to Orange township with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Norman McLeod, when she was eight. Later she attended Michigan State college for two years. On April 11, 1907, she married Seymour Gates at her home. Following the wedding, they moved to the present Gates home on US-16. They lived in Ionia city from 1916 to 1920 while Mr. Gates was county treasurer. She was a member of the LeValley Methodist church. Surviving are the husband; a daughter, Miss Laura Gates, of Highland Park; two sons, Harold of Mason and Arthur at home; one grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Leo Worden of Caro and Mrs. Ora Weed of Saranac; and two brothers, Norman McLeod of Missoula, Mont., and Guy of Lyons. The body will be at the Stone-Kauffman funeral home until noon Wednesday when it will be removed to the LeValley church where services will be held at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Willis B. Hunting will officiate. Interment will be in Tuttle cemetery.
