The son of Richard and Elizabeth Blackleddge Gay, he was born April 9, 1923, in Marion. On Nov. 7, 1953, in Angola, Ind., he married Ilene J. Horton. John provided for his family by working as a union ironworker for most of his life and was involved in many great construction and civil engineering projects, including the building of the Mackinac Bridge. He was a member of Ironworkers Local No. 783. He was preceded in death by his parents; and eight sisters and brothers, Beulah Gibbs, Grace Meyers, James Gay, Robert Gay, Nellie Gay, Mary Gay, Stanley Gay, Paul Gay. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ilene J. Gay; their children, Jacqueline and Arthur Brooks of Orleans, Terry Satterlee, Joseph and Deborah Gay, all of Greenville, John R. Gay of Belding; sister, Eunice Malek of McBain; brother, David Gay of Washington; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services are 3 p.m. Tuesday at Shiloh Community Church with burial following in Orleans Township Cemetery. The Rev. Kenneth Harger, pastor of Shiloh Community Church, will officiate. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Brown-Teman & Christiansen Funeral Home, 511 S. Franklin St., Greenville, and also from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
