Gazella, age 78 of Ionia, passed away March 17, 2008 in Ionia. He was born Feb. 22, 1930 in Ionia, the son of Francis and Mildred (Jackson) Gazella. Carl graduated from SS Peter & Paul Catholic School in 1948. He married Jane Ingram May 10, 1952. Carl worked for Clorewell Electric for 30 years. He served in the United States Army in the Corp. of Engineers and was a member of the Ionia Knights of Columbus. He played and coached basketball at SS Peter & Paul Catholic School and was a Boy Scout Leader for several years. As a young man he worked for his family's grocery store located in downtown Ionia called Lauster Market and he continued to follow the family's business of food vendors best known as Gazella Finer Foods at the Ionia Free Fair. Carl is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Jane Gazella of Ionia; children, Linda (Charles) Beat of Harbor Springs, Michael (Linda) Gazella of Lansing, Phillip (Christi) Gazella of Lexington, S.C., Joan (Nick) Antonakis of Rockford, Jonathan Gazella (Pam Cowling) of Ionia, Barbara Redd of Grand Rapids, Russell Gazella of Ionia and Christine (Scott) Geldhof of Ionia; brother, Charles (Elaine) Gazella of Toledo, Ohio; sisters, Catherine Gallagher of Flushing, Louise (John) Sweet of Battle Creek, Rosemary Gazella of Kalamazoo, Janet Gazella of Grand Rapids, Margaret Bonham of Macomb and Mary Jane Gazella of Grand Rapids; 13 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James and Richard and sisters, Janice and Josephine. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, March 24, 2008, 11 a.m., at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Father Melvin Fox celebrant. The family will receive friends and relatives Sunday 4 to 6 p.m. with a Rosary at 6 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
