Geisen, 89, longtime Belding resident and decorated World War II Veteran, passed away Tuesday afternoon December 23, 2014 at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids. John was born in Belding on February 19, 1925 at the same home where he lived the majority of his life. He was the son of Nicholas A. and Bertha (Martin) Geisen. John graduated from Belding High School with the Class of 1943 and later proudly served his country as a machine gunner in the United States Army during World War II and recipient medals of honor including: three Purple Hearts, a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, four battle stars, a Bronze Arrowhead for an assault landing and his proudest, the Combat Infantry Badge. After the war he worked at Salzman Dry Cleaners and later owned Roxys Restaurant. He worked at the Gulf Station, Vogue Cleaners, had a partnership in Greenville Tool and Machine and Westdale-Appleland Realty. He was active in City Government being elected to City Council in 1967 and later served as Mayor for six years starting in 1968. He was a founding member of both Belding VFW Post #4406 and the Belding American Legion Post #203. He had served as a Past Post Commander and in the Honor Guard. John also served on the Ionia County Veterans Council for nearly 60 years. He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Belding. John had a love of people, was trusted by many and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. John married Carmen Brown at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Belding on June 23, 1957. He is loved and survived by his wife Carmen, and their children; Ann (Doug) Bromley of Belding, Mary Geisen of Lansing, Sue (Dale) Baylis, Spencer “Pep” (Cindy) Geisen and Julie “Julia” Stout all of Belding, grandchildren; Ryan, Katie (Shaun), Jenna, Laura, David, Christina, Luke, Monica, Jonathon, Nicholas, Joseph, Zack, Megan and Olivia, great grandchildren; Benjamin, Cody, Tyler, Wyatt, Jacob, adopted brother; Dr. A. Joseph Andenno, many nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings; Leona, Helen, Florence, Harold “Nick”, Joe, Mary and Pauline. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 29, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Darrel Kempf presiding. Committal prayers will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Military Honors will be given by the Honor Guard of the Belding VFW and American Legion. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 5:00-8:00 with a rosary prayed at 8 p.m. at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. Memorials may be given to a Military Educational Scholarship being administered by the Belding VFW and American Legion or a charity of one’s choice.
