Mr. Gerkey was born in Liberty township, Hardin county, Ohio, September 25, 1849, and when about fourteen years old with his parents and brother George drove overland to Carlton township, Barry County where they had purchased the 240 acre farm now occupied by Cleo Sears and D. O’Connor. About thirty years ago he moved to Lake Odessa where he had built a home on Sixth avenue following the carpenter’s trade until age compelled him to retire. In January 1931 he suffered a slight stroke at which time he was removed to the home of his daughter, Mrs. John E. Hunter, north of town, where the funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. under the auspices of Lake Odessa lodge No. 395, F. and A.M. with burial at Lakeside cemetery. Deceased was also a charter member of Lake Odessa chapter No. 315 O.E.S. The immediate family consists of three daughters, one granddaughter, and three great grandchildren.
