All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Marilyn Ransom mlnransom@chartermi.net June 14, 2010, 5:43 pm The Lake Odessa Wave, Wednesday, March 24, 1926 Mrs. Jacob Gerlinger, mother of the large Gerlinger family, all of whom settled in or near Lake Odessa excepting one in Chicago, and one in Cadillac, passed away at the home of her son Samuel Gerlinger last Friday. Mrs. Gerlinger was tenderly cared for in her declining years by this, her youngest son, and his wife. For many years grandma Gerlinger has been among her children and grand children a care but a blessing in old age. Johanna Fredrica Richard was born December 12, 1840 in Wurttemberg, Germany and died March 19, 1926 at her home in Odessa Township, age 85 years, 3 months and 7 days. Deceased came to American in 1853, coming alone as she was not able to come with the family because of having the smallpox, staying with relatives till she was able to travel. She landed safely at the home of her parents at Bridgewater near Ann Arbor. A few years later she came with her parents to Odessa Township. She was united in married with Jacob Gerlinger in 1861, and moved with her husband to Maple Grove Township, after five years they returned to Odessa and purchased the farm that was her home till called by death, which came peacefully. Her husband died in 1883, leaving her to care for a large family of children. Ten children were born to them, one dying in infancy, two others, Benjamin and Henry, preceding her in death within the past two years; there are left to mourn four sons, Daniel of Nashville, Joseph of Chicago, Samuel of Odessa, William of Cadillac, three daughters, Mrs. Emma Lucas of Lake Odessa, Mrs. Lydia McLeod and Mrs. Rose Wachter of Woodland, fifteen grandchildren, and four great grand children, with a host of other relatives and friends, but they mourn not as those who have no hope for early in life she yielded her life to God; uniting with the Evangelical Church, being a charter member of the Woodland Society, and was faithful to the end; she was the last one of the original membership of the Woodland Society, also a member of the Woman’s Missionary Society. A sister, Mrs. Mary Baker, and a brother Jacob Richard preceded her to the realm beyond. The deceased always had the work of the church at heart, being devoted to its interests, also to her family; remembering them especially at a throne of grace; in her prayers calling each by name, imploring God to bring them to him; endeavoring to do as she wished to be done by. Funeral services were held from the home on Monday, March 22, at 1:30 p.m. by her pastor, Rev. A. J. Hettler, sermon in the Congregational church in Lake Odessa, assisted by Rev. a. E. Gay, pastor of the church. The singing was furnished by Mrs. Walburga Morgan, Mr. Leon Gilson and Mrs. Thomas Johnson Card of Thanks We wish to express our appreciation to our friends and relatives, to the Evangelical and Congregational societies and the K. of P. for the beautiful flowers.
