She was born Feb. 8, 1924 in Clarksville, Michigan to parents Edward and Augusta (Thomas) Shepard. She attended high school in Sheridan, Michigan and shortly afterwards married her first husband Meredith Loper of Fenwick and together they had two children, John and Bonita. That marriage dissolved and later on Betty married her second husband James Gesselman of Carson City and together they had one son (Michael J. Gesselman). Betty worked at the Chrysler Trim Plant in Lyons for a few years, and then she went to work for the Department of Corrections until her retirement in 1986. She was a life number of the Sheridan VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Betty attended LeValley United Methodist Church. Betty loved to go out dancing to places that had live country western music and polka bands. Betty had a deep passion for sewing and she was a wonderful seamstress. She loved being outdoors, going for walks, picnicking, mushroom hunting, and traveling which she visited most of the United States,, and Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. Betty had a green thumb for gardening that could probably surpass the best of them as her flowers were always so very lovely and plentiful. One of Betty's most favorite past times was yard sales and she sure could and the bargains. Betty had a knack for decorating and we would say to her that she missed her calling because she could make something out of nothing and make it very appealing. Betty loved and lived her life to the fullest and she will be greatly missed Surviving is her son Michael (Gail) Gesselman of Ionia; gramdchlldren Michael (Ciera) Gesselman II of Portland David Gesselman (Karri Walczak) of Ionia, Amanda (John) Pfeiffer of Midland; great grandchildren, Michael Gesselman III, of Portland of Marielle Pfeiffer of Midland; daughter, Bonita (Russ) Roberts of Ionia; granddaughter, Dawn (Todd) Bissell of Mason; great granddaughter, Kirstie Bisel of Mason; great great granddaughter, Ryleigh Oliver of Mason; Son, John (Linda) Loper of Beaverton; granddaughters, Tammy (John) Miron and Pamela (Scott) Gross; and Grandson, Jeff Loper. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Edward Shepard; and sister, Virginia Jensen. Funeral services have already taken place at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
