Nellie Mapes, daughter of Adelia and Henry Mapes was born in Belmont, New York, March 15, 1860 and passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Fannie Thorpe, April 2, 1930, at the age of seventy years and 18 days. At the age of nine years she came to Michigan, spending a few years, but later returned to New York. On March 15, 1877 she was united in marriage with Byron Gibbs of Sebewa, Michigan, at Belmont, New York, the town of her birth. They immediately came to Michigan and settled on the farm where they spent many years of happiness in the rearing of their family, improving their home and engaging in all the activities of church and school of the community which today speak of their never-tiring efforts. To their union two children were born: a son Bruce and one daughter Fannie. At a very early age Mrs. Gibbs became converted and joined the Wesleyan Methodist church of North Sebewa, being a most faithful worker and lover of church and its activities her entire life time, acting as Sunday school teacher and holding other offices during the existence of the church at North Sebewa. Mrs. Gibbs has been in poor health the past two years but patiently trusted her God and often expressed herself as willing and ready to meet her Father in heaven, who doeth all things well. “Aunt Nellie” as she was so well known has lived a life that has been an example to her friends wherever she went. Those left to mourn their loss are her faithful children, a son Bruce Gibbs of Clare and a daughter Mrs. George Thorpe at whose home her last days were spent, four grandchildren, a brother Walter Mapes of Meauwatka, a sister, Mrs. Lottie Thompson of Lansing, many other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral service was conducted by a former pastor Rev. B. A. Hammond of Hickory Corners, Rev. Durkee of Lansing offered prayer. Mrs. Gibbs was laid to rest in the Sebewa cemetery by the side of her husband who preceded her nearly twenty-two years ago. Those from a distance to attend the funeral were: Walter Mapes and Maurice McConnel of Meauwatka; Frank Mapes, wife and son Ronald of Grand Rapids; Mrs. Fred Miles of Holland; Rev. Durkee and wife, Mr. and Mrs. John Baker, Lucille Thorpe, Mrs. Lottie Thompson; Clare Thompson, Jack Dunnigan, George Burham, of Lansing; Roy Nichols and wife, Alice Crapo, Clem Crapo of Bay City; Ima Thompson of Lansing.
