R. GIBBS DIES AT CARSON CITY Was Former Well Known Portland Resident And Veteran of Civil War Word has been received in Portland announcing the death of George R. Gibbs, a former well known resident of this place, his death occurring at Carson City Tuesday evening, where he had resided for the past 50 years. While living in Portland, Mr. Gibbs was employed as a blacksmith and wagon maker, by Hinman & Perrigo, their shop at that time occupying the site where the Crane Drug store, Lehman clothing store and Wheeler Jewelry store now stands. At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted in the 27th Michigan infantry and served throughout the conflict. Returning to Portland he again took up his position with Hinman & Perrigo, continuing in their employ until 1872 when he moved to Carson City, where for eight years he served as postmaster. Since living at that place he has paid numerous visits to Portland, never missing a chance to attend the annual reunions of his old comrades, who served in the war with him. Although he was eighty years of age, he marched in the Memorial Day parade at Carson City Tuesday and it is thought that this effect was the cause of his death, which occurred suddenly in the evening of that day. He is survived by a daughter, Miss Mable Gibbs at home, and two sons, Frank of Iowa and George Jr. of Detroit. He was also an uncle of Norman E. Gibbs of Portland.
