The two men had gone to the field after their mid-day meal with Mr. Gibbs apparently in his usual good health. Shortly afterward he stated to Mr. McClelland that he was feeling very queer and thought he would sit down and rest a moment. Those were the last words ever spoken by him as he had hardly seated himself in the shade before death came so suddenly that it was impossible to render him any assistance. Mr. Gibbs was born at Garrisville, Ohio, 70 years ago last April, coming to Portland with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Milton Gibbs., when a small baby. The family settled on the farm west of town now occupied by his son, Almer, which came into the possession of Mr. Gibbs after the death of his parents and where he resided until 16 years ago when he moved to Portland. In 1880 he was married to Elvina Welch, who with two sons survive. They are Sylvester, of Fort Collins, Col., and Almer of Portland. One brother, William Gibbs, of Portland also survives. Funeral services will be held at the home on Kent street this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:00 o’clock in charge of Rev. J. H. Stewart. Burial will be made in Portland cemetery.
