He was born Aug. 7, 1918 in Huffton, S.D., the son of Lewis and Bernice (Luce) Gibbs. He was a graduate of Palo High School with the class of 1936 and served in World War II with the US Army Air Corps. He retired from Northland Corporation in 1980 after 32 years of service as an assembly line repairman and was former postmaster at Palo before entering military service. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 506 in Sheridan. He married on May 30, 1914 in Palo to Marian Borden and she survives along with their children, Yvonne (Gordie) Steve, Yvette Chittenden, Cindy (Scott) Brokaw, Max Jr. (Allean) Gibbs all of Belding, Kelly and Sue Gibbs of South Haven, Scott (Kathy) Gibbs and Tim (Ronda) Gibbs of Belding; 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Georgia Meister and Dorothy Gibbs; and two brothers, John and Clayton Gibbs. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Ionia. Visitation was on Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Shiloh Community Church.
