Portland Review – Sept. 4, 2011

Wilbur Emory Gierman, 91, of Portland, passed away August 28, 2011 in Grand 
Rapids. He was born May 13, 1920 in Sebewa Township, Michigan, the son of 
George and Mae (Oatley) Gierman. Wilbur married Marcella Heintzleman on March 
24, 1943 in Potterville, Michigan and were married 67 years. She preceded him 
in death on September 27, 2010.

Wilbur grew up and lived all his life on the family farm, located in Sebewa 
Township; continuing to farm until his retirement in 1993. His greatest love 
was his family, his farm and his church. He was a lifelong member of the Sebewa 
Center United Methodist Church.



Wilbur is survived by his daughters, Cheryll Warren of Owosso, Janet (Leon) 
Rudd of Ionia; son, Eric (Lorri) Gierman of Jenison; daughter-in-law, Adrienne 
Gierman of Traverse City; grandchildren, Matt (Cariel) Warren, Michael Warren, 
Jackie (Todd) Holm, Kristen (James) reed, Ryan Gierman, Clint (Angy) Rudd, 
Jarrod (Heika) Rudd, Jason Gierman, Josh Gierman; great-grandchildren, Audrie 
Warren, Mitchell, Holm, Madison Hold, Megan Holm, Jane reed, Emily Allen, 
Cynthia Allen, Samantha Allen; many nieces and nephews. 

Wilbur was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Rev. George Gierman; son-in-
law, John Warren; and his sister, Reba Thuma Moore.



Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 1, 2011, 11:00 a.m. at the 
Sebewa Center United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeff Schrock and Pastor W. J. 
(Bill) Amundsen officiating. Interment will be at the East Sebewa Cemetery. The 
family will receive friends and relatives Wednesday 2- 4 and 6-8 p.m. at the 
Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
