GIERMAN. He Was a Prominent German, and Has Resided in Ionia for 35 Years. William Gierman, for the past 35 years a respected citizen of Ionia, died very suddenly at his home, North Jefferson street, just outside the city limits at about midnight Monday night. Mr. Gierman had been ailing for the past four months. although there was no improvement in his health, he was up and around the house from day to day and as late as last week Friday was able to walk down town. Last evening he rested on the couch, and later retired to his bed. At about 11:30 Mrs. Gierman gave him some medicine and also retired to rest. She fell asleep and at 12:15 was suddenly awakened by the heavy breathing of her husband. She immediately went to his aid but before she reached his side he became unconscious and fell back and died. The real cause of death was heart failure, although he had been long a sufferer from kidney trouble. Mr. Gierman was 55 years of age. He was born in Germany and came to America in 1862, locating in Otisco, where he remained about a year, thence coming to Ionia. With the exception of one or two years he has always resided here. He was a carpenter by trade and has also given considerable attention to fruit growing. He was a member of the German Lutheran church one of the board of trustees, and has always been a good, quiet and law abiding citizen. He was particularly prominent in German circles, and many are the friends who mourn his death. He leaves besides his wife, three children, the oldest being Charles Gierman, who for a number of years past has been a faithful and efficient employee of the Sentinel. The others are Mrs. Wm. Gellendin, and Miss Martha aged 13 years. He also leaves two brothers, Charles and Frederick Gierman, both of this city, and Mrs. Fred Pilgrim of Otisco. To all the Sentinel extends its deepest sympathy in their sudden bereavement. The funeral will be held from the Lutheran church, North Jefferson street, at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. C. Succop officiating. The interment will be in Highland Park cemetery.
