Gilbert was born in Washington, Mass., Sept. 2nd 1832 and lived on the old farm where his father and mother died in 1854. In 1858 he was united in marriage to his first wife. In 1863 they came to Genessee Co., Mich. where they lived about 13 years. In 1876 they went to New York his wife dying while there on a visit. He later returned to Barry Co., Mich. where he purchased a farm which he later sold and in 1886 was again united in marriage to Mrs. Fannie Sears, after which they settled on the farm which they owned until his death Sept. 20th when he passed to the bright beyond, at the age of 79 years and 18 days. He was a great sufferer for the last 10 years, and bore his suffering patiently, without ever a murmur. He never spoke ill of anyone and was loved by all who knew him. He led a very exemplary life and took Christ for his guide. Out of a family of nine children two only survive him, one sister Mrs. Parna Tilson of Amherst, Mass., and one brother Hiram B. Gilbert of Genessee Co. Mich. He also leaves to mourn his loss a wife, one brother one sister and three step-sons; Charles Sears of Kinross, Mich.. Will Sears of Odessa township and George Sears who lived on the farm with him, besides a host of relatives and friends, who all will greatly miss him. The funeral services were held at the Tamarac church Sunday at 12 o'clock and burial was in Lakeside cemetery. Rev. Isaac Mourer officiating. Those from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gilbert of Rankin, Mich. Mrs. Hettie Alger of Flint, Mich. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Haskins, Mr. and Mrs. Alf Haskins, Mr. and Mrs. Will Edson, Mrs. Mary Edson and children Nettie, Rose, and Floyd of Saranac.
