He was born on May 19, 1927 in the Lansing the son of Owen and Vernie Gilbert. Jack was a member of St. Patrick Church, Knights of Columbus #2168 and the V.F.W. Post #4090. He enlisted at the age of 16 in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Jack loved fishing and reading. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Wendell and Robert. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Eloise; children Steve (Kathy) Gilbert of Drummond Island, Terry (Phyllis) Gilbert of Portland, Jeff (Jean) Gilbert of South Haven and Scott (Shawn) Gilbert of DeWitt; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren; four brothers and two sisters. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 10, 2015 at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Rev. Charlon Mason presiding. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Friday, January 9, 2015 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass at the church on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the V.F.W. Post #4090 in memory of Jack.
