Blanche Coles Gilbert, a resident of South Boston for 87 years, passed away,
Saturday, March 12, at the home of her brother-in-law, George H. Blake, in
Detroit.  Mrs. Gilbert was born December 18, 1862 in Oswego County, N.Y., the
daughter of Rev. Henry and Elizabeth Coles.  The family came to Michigan when
she was four years old and settled on a farm in Boston Township.  She attended
the District schools and Ionia County Normal and taught school in the County for
many years.  

She was united in marriage to Melvin C. Gilbert, December 13, 1889.  They had
one daughter Ruth, who died at the age of 12.  Her husband preceded her in death
11 years ago. 

One of the outstanding contributions to her community was as teacher of a Sunday
School class in the Ware school house. Most of the young people in that
neighborhood attended her class and will always remember her devotion to God and
strict adherences to her Christian convictions.  Several generations of
neighborhood children have called her Aunt Blanche.  Mrs. Gilbert, since 1929,
has made her home with Mr. Blake, spending the summers on the old homestead. 
She suffered a stroke a year ago this month and had been confined to her bed
since.  

She is survived by her brother-in-law, Mr. Blake, and five nieces and nephews,
all children of her brother, the late Seymour Coles.  

Funeral services were held Monday, March 14, at Roth’s Chapel with the Rev.
Philip Glotfelty officiating.  Burial was in South Boston Cemetery.
