Gilbert was born September 2, 1853, at Conesus Center, N.Y. He was left an orphan when six years old. At the age of 7, he came to Boston township, Ionia county, to live with an aunt, Mrs. James Barnum. November 4, 1879 he married Sarah Coles and they went to Kalkaska county, then new, to make their home. Four children were born to this union, two of them dying in infancy. The wife passed away March 14, 1893. August 22, 1894, he married Elsie Wylie, who, with the two children, survives. He returned to Boston township in 1879, where he has lived until ill health forced him to leave the farm. Four years ago, he moved to Lowell, where he has since lived. He passed away April 4, 1924, aged 70 years, 7 months and 2 days, leaving to mourn his wife, one son, Ralph J. and one daughter, Florence Noyes, and three grandchildren besides relatives and friends. He has spent most of his life among you. You know him—words are not needed. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon, April 7, at 2 p.m. and the remains laid to rest in the South Boston cemetery; Rev. H. H. Harris, officiating clergyman.
