Although she had been in poor health several months, she had seemed as well as usual Wednesday afternoon until she was suddenly stricken in her home. Mrs. Gilchrist was a retiring woman but perhaps made so by the circumstances that surrounded her life of industry. Those who knew her found in her only the most admirable traits, those of unselfishness and charity for others. She was widowed while still young by the death of her husband and left with a family of 10 children to rear. She labored untiringly for her children, kept the home together, and until they were old enough to help her, she supported them by her own hard work. A few years ago one of her sons was left with a family of three children and the same beautiful spirit that had been manifested in her life was again to be exemplified and she assumed their care. The last few years many sorrowful experiences have come into her life and within three years she has been called on to lose by death four immediate relatives, two daughters, Mrs. Ward, of Grand Rapids, who died suddenly, and Mrs. Powell, of Belding; a sister, Mrs. Mary Wilson, of Detroit, and a grandson, Herbert Powell, of Belding, who died a few weeks ago following an accident. Mrs. Gilchrist was born 74 years ago in Drumbo, Ontario, and united in marriage to Alonzo Gilchrist September 15, 1874. She had lived the greater part of her life in this vicinity. Those surviving her are her children, Ralph and Emery Gilchrist, of Ionia; Orpha Holmes, Detroit; Fred Gilchrist, of Flint; Mrs. James Holly, of Mt. Morris; Mrs. R. B. Dimond, of Flushing; James Gilchrist, of Ontario, Can., besides 19 grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Ellen Lomery, Brantford, Ont.; two brothers, Charles Herbert, of Detroit, and Samuel Herbert, of Birmingham. The funeral services will be conducted from the Church of Christ Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The burial will be in Highland Park cemetery. The body will repose at the Boynton funeral chapel until Friday afternoon when the remains will be taken to the home.
