She was born January 31, 1930 in Big Stone Gap, Virginia to George and Mollie Campbell. She married to Leslie Johnson and also to Donald R. Gillett, who both preceded her in death. Mildred is survived by her children, David (Brenda) Johnson of Ionia, Stephen (Dianne) Johnson of Lakeland, FL., Cathy (Todd) Meyering of Cascade, and Julie (Douglas) Schafer of Hubbardston; siblings, George Campbell of Castlewood, VA., Harry Campbell of Clarksville, Helen Burke of Dante, VA., and many much loved grandchildren. Mildred worked for Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. of Virginia, AT&T in Detroit, and Michigan Bell in Ionia. She was employed a few years at Johnson Shoe Co. in Ionia. Mildred and her late husband, Donald Gillett spent two years with Wycliffe Bible Translators in the Eastern Jungles of Ecuador. Upon returning to the state she did volunteer work as Parent-Aide Coordinator, working with families of child abuse and neglect with the Department of Social Services in Ionia County. She also worked as visitation supervisor for the Friends of the Court in Ionia County. Upon retirement, she and Donald moved from Ionia to Hersey, MI and lived there 11 years. During that time she was called on of God to teach his words which was her greatest delight. She taught women inmates in the Osceola County Jail; many classes in homes and churches around Hersey, Evart, Reed City, Greenville, and Ionia areas. Mildred also traveled, doing singing & speaking engagements along with Juanita in their group called “Almost Home”. In addition, she sang with the group called “The Gospel Gathering”. A special thank you to Hospice nurses and a special heartfelt thanks to Joy Boyce for her dedication and love. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28 at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Pastor Andy Croel officiating. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 27 at the funeral home. Interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer society or Grand Rapids Hospice.
