Oct. 4, 2012 Jacquelyn (Jackie) Marie Gilliland slipped peacefully into the everlasting to join the love of her life, husband Tom on Sept. 29, 2012. Jacquelyn was born Feb. 12, 1927 to Voight and Nettie (Miller) Curtis and lived her entire life in the Lake Odessa Area. She was a 1944 graduate of Lake Odessa High School. After high school Jackie moved to Lansing where she worked as a receptionist- typist for the Family Service Agency and took night classes at Lansing Secretarial School until August of 1945 when she moved back home. Jackie married Thomas C. Gilliland on June 10, 1946. Together they raised five children. She worked a short time at a factory in Ionia, and then took a job for the Woodland Mutual Insurance Company as a typist. Soon after she became the company secretary and held that position until 1953 when son Terry was born. Jackie regarded her time as a stay-at-home mother as some of the best years of her life. In 1958 Jackie began working part time for United Bank and continued until she returned to work for Woodland Mutual Insurance Company in 1963. In 1968 she began working for McCartney Agency, Inc. Jackie enjoyed working as office manager for McCartney Agency, being proud of the fact she had passed both her insurance and real estate exams without going to school. She retired in 1985 when McCartney Agency was sold. As a grandmother, one of Jackie's favorite traditions was decorating Christmas cookies with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jackie was a charter member of the Ionia County Genealogical Society and a member of the First Families of Ionia County Society. She was an active member of the Lake Odessa Historical Society, serving on the board for many years. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and Alethians, as well as the United Methodist Women. She and husband Tom enjoyed many years of golf and bowling, both in Michigan and North Carolina, where they wintered for many years, near their youngest son Brian. Jackie was preceded in death earlier this year by husband Tom, and by sister Jerilou Cross. Jackie will be greatly missed by her five children: Barbara Bosworth, Thomas (Jane) Gilliland Jr., Terry (Jocelyne) Gilliland, Bonnie Mattson and Brian (Darci Rozelle) Gilliland; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters Joan (Lynn) Prentiss, Janis (Ed) Kenyon, brother-in-law Kendall Cross, and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind Scooter, who was her constant companion in the month following the death of husband, Tom. Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 7, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Koops Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa. Services will be held Monday, Oct. 8, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church. Visitation will beheld one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pennock Hospice, or Central United Methodist Church.
