The Lake Odessa Wave, Friday, February 7, 1908
Following closely the announcement in last week’s Wave of the critical 
condition of Mr. Chas. Gilliland at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alvin Bever 
north of town, he passed away early Friday morning surrounded by all eight of 
his children, living just a week lacking a few hours, from the time the stroke 
of paralysis took him.

Mr. Gilliland was born at Hagerstown, Maryland, June 27, 1826 and died January 
31, 1908, aged 81 years, 7 months and four days.  He came with his parents, 
when a small boy, to Van Wert county, Ohio.  At the age of twenty three he was 
united in marriage to Miss Rachel Meece of that county to which union were 
born fourteen children, ten boys and four girls, eight of whom are living, and 
whose names are as follows,  John of Wamego, Kansas; William of Paulding, 
Ohio, and Mrs. Alva Biblet, T.B. Gilliland, Mrs. A. J. Bever, and Edward, 
Frank and Lenox all of Lake Odessa and this vicinity.  One daughter, Mrs. Mary 
Barkdull died about twelve years ago.

After thirty-one years of happy wedded life, Mrs. Gilliland departed this life 
in the year 1880 at Van Wert.  In 1883 Mr. Gilliland moved his family to 
Michigan settling on the farm now owned by Wm. Hansbarger north of town, which 
he had purchased a year or so before and where he lived until about seven 
years ago, since which time he has made his home with his children, visiting 
around among them at pleasure.

Besides the children he leaves to mourn his departure twenty grandchildren, 
three great grandchildren, one brother, five sisters and a host of warm 
friends.  He was a man liked by everybody, always being of a kind and obliging 
disposition.  He had been a devoted follower of the Christian faith for many 
years; being a great Bible student, his Bible was his constant companion and a 
source of great comfort to him.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the Congregational church conducted 
by the pastor, Rev. Prestidge and was largely attended, though blustery and 
bitter cold the day, and interment was made in Lakeside cemetery.  Mrs. Israel 
Cave, a sister, of Lowell and son Ed Cave and wife were here to attend the 
funeral also James Barkdull of Belding, Bert Gilliland of Grand Rapids and 
Orley Gilliland of Portland, all grandsons.

sympathy during the recent illness and death of our beloved father and also to 
those who brought flowers and especially the L.O.T.M. M., also to the choir do 
we all extend our heartfelt thanks.
