Max Smith was present at the time that Lieut. John Girard was killed in the Argonne fighting and saw the body of the gallant Ionia lieutenant lying on the battlefield. Lieut. Girard was killed, says Sergt. Smith, by a machine gun bullet through the head and not by a one pound shell as reported heretofore. Sergt. Smith also witnessed the wounding of Sergt. Leroy Daussman as well as other members of the company who were killed. Sergt. Daussman lost a leg in a shell explosion and died within a short time. Additional Comments: Transcriber's Note: The local researcher has indicated death occurred October 5, 1918.
