All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sandy Heintzelman sheintz@iserv.net May 24, 2014, 10:33 pm Ionia County News, 16 Nov 1939 Former Official Succumbs Here Charles Girard was Former Water Commissioner Charles Girard, longtime resident of Ionia and prominent in city affairs for more than 25 years died at his home, 211 Dye street Saturday afternoon, Armistice Day November 11, about four o’clock. He had suffered from a heart ailment and a complication of disease for more than a year. In September he underwent an operation and appeared to be gaining in health and strength until his heart failed and death came as he sat reading in his home. He was found by a neighbor who went to his home to prepare his evening meal. Mr. Girard was born in Piqua, O., and came to Ionia with his parents when he was two years of age. He attended the Ionia public schools and for many years worked at his trade of marble cutter. He was united in marriage with Miss Katherine Donohue of Hubbardston in 1899. Two children were born to them, John F. Girard, deceased, and Thomas H. Girard of Detroit. Mr. Girard was water commissioner for about 28 years and Ionia city clerk for several terms. He also served as chief of the volunteer city fire department. He is survived by one son, Thomas, who resides in Detroit. His other son, Captain John F. Girard, for whom the Ionia American Legion post was named, was killed in action in France in October 1918, 21 years ago. Funeral services were held from Myers Funeral Home at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon, November 14. Rev. Paul L. Stewart conducted the funeral and burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery beside his wife who died four years ago. Bearers were Don White, Chas. Jack, Jr., Hollis Duell, Thomas Duffey, Don Crawford and Clarence DeHart.
