“John F. Gleason Is Cancer Victim”
“Suffered Long From Ill Health”

John Freemont Gleason of this city, died Wednesday morning, April 19, 1916, 
after an illness of a few month’s duration.  As there was some doubt as to the 
cause of his sickness, a post mortem examination was held, and cancer of the 
stomach was found to be the cause of his death.  He was formerly employed by 
the Richardson Silk Co., but thinking out-door work would improve his health 
which was very poor, he purchased the Myron F. Greene milk route and 
consolidated it with Phil Gleason’s route in October.  In January he was 
forced to retire from this work, and hired a man to take charge of his route 
temporarily, thinking that a few weeks of complete rest might restore his 
health.  However, he failed to recuperate and steadily grew weaker until the 
day of his death.  Mr. Gleason will always be remembered by those who were 
closely associated with him as having a kind and free heart and was ready at 
all times to extend his sympathy and aid to those in need.  He was a former 
member of the choir at the Church of Christ in this city.

The deceased is survived by his wife and three children, Grant F., of the 
Philippine Islands, Leon and Mrs. Harry Kuger of this city, also a sister, 
Mrs. Geo. R. Gleason, of this city, who is the only survivor of a family of 
six.  Funeral services were held in the Central M. E. church Sunday afternoon, 
Rev. W. E. Doty officiating.  The funeral was largely attended by friends and 
relatives.  Many beautiful flowers were sent.  The interment was made in the 
old cemetery.

Out of town visitors at the home of Phil Gleason, Sunday, were:  Mr. and Mrs. 
J. C. Lambertson and son, Thane, Mr. and Mrs. Joel Palmer, Hattybel Gleason 
and Mr. and Mrs. John Gleason of Orleans, Mrs. J. A. Herrick, Mr. and Mrs. 
John Vollmers and son, Joseph, and Mrs. Hattie Gleason of Grand Rapids, and 
George and Jesse Gleason of the Valley City Casket Co., Grand Rapids.  All 
were here to attend the funeral of their uncle, J. F. Gleason.
