OLDEST RESIDENT IN PORTLAND TWP. PASSES SUNDAY
Death Claims Horace C. Glines at Ripe Old Age of 95 Years – Was Civil War 
Veteran

With the death of Horace C. Glines, Sunday afternoon, Portland Township loses 
its oldest and one of its best known and most highly esteemed pioneer 
residents.

Mr. Glines came to Portland in 1854 taking up his residence here about a year 
after his marriage to Emma T. Way of this village.  He was a native of New 
York, having been born in Cohocton Township, Steuben County, in that state on 
October 12, 1827.  At the age of 15 years he was apprenticed to a carpenter 
and millwright at Cuba, New York, and at the end of three years left that man 
and began wandering about the country finally locating at London, Canada.  In 
1847 he came to Michigan taking up his residence at Rogersville.  A short time 
later he went to Muskegon where he was employed in the lumber mills in that 
place until his marriage, when he came to Portland.

When the Civil War started he enlisted in Co. D., 9th Michigan Infantry, 
serving (unreadable) year when he was discharged on account of disability.  
Since the death of his wife who passed away twenty years ago, he has made his 
home with his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Flowers.

Aside from being the oldest resident in Portland he was one of the oldest 
Masons in the state.

Four children survive.  They are Mrs. Elizabeth Flowers at whose home his 
death occurred; Mrs. Clara VanBuren of Grand Rapids; C. l. Glines of Harrison, 
Ark., and T. F. Glines of Marshall, Ark.  There are also 11 grandchildren and 
12 great-grandchildren.  The funeral was held from the residence, Wednesday 
afternoon, under the auspices of Portland Lodge, F. & A. M., in charge of Rev. 
John H.Steward, of Sparta.  Interment was in Portland Cemetery.
