Wave-Times, Friday, June 29, 1923 WEBSTER GODDARD FALLS ASLEEP AFTER 92 YEARS OF LIFE A few months ago we gave an interesting account of the venerable old man who peacefully closed his eyes in earthly scenes last Friday morning. A splendid quiet life met a death in accordance with his quiet living. The end was peaceful. On the previous Sunday his strength seemed to give out and he fell when going from the dinner table. This was the beginning of the end, he getting weaker and weaker until death came. He was cared for the last six years by his niece, Miss Lola Goddard of this place, and no own child could have more tenderly ministered to a parent than Miss Goddard did for Uncle Webster. Short services were held Monday morning at the home and the body was taken to Lansing for burial. Rev. E.E. Showerman preached, and he and his wife sang. -OBITUARY- Daniel Webster Goddard was born March 2, 1831, in Genesco, Livingston county, New York. In 1938 his parents moved to Lenawee county, Michigan, and in 1844 came to Sebewa, Ionia county, locating on what is now the Fred Yager farm. He became a Christian in early life and had a prominent part in the West Sebewa Presbyterian church in it's prosperous days. April 11, 1869 he was united in marriage to Amelia Carpenter, who died April 11, 1870. January 18, 1872, he married Mary DePew, who died November 9, 1913. In the early 80's he sold his farm in Sebewa and moved with his wife and adopted daughter to Lansing. The daughter died at the age of 13. In November, 1916, after living alone for three years, he came to Lake Odessa to make his home with his niece, Miss Lola Goddard, and remained with her to the time of his death, of comfort and hope. -CARD OF THANKS- I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to the friends and neighbors (and most especially Mrs. Hubbard) for their kindness and thoughtfulness during the days mu uncle was confined to his bed, and at the time after his death. I also thank the Aid Society and others for the beautiful flowers, and Rev. and Mrs. Showerman for the songs they sang and his words.
