Jefferson H. Godfrey, 90, civil war veteran living northwest of Belding died suddenly Saturday at his home. He was dressing to attend the funeral of a civil war comrade, Samuel H. Davis, 95, of Smyrna. Both veterans had been lifelong friends. Mr. Godfrey was born in Vergennes, May 18, 1844 and as a youth carried mail on horseback. He enlisted in Co. M. 6th Michigan cavalry, at the age of 18, served under Custer and under Sheridan and was at Cedar Creek, when Sheridan made his famous ride. He was taken prisoner and served six months in Libby Prison and went west after the war on the Indian expedition to the Powder river. In 1869 he was married to C. Amelia Sabin in 1869 and has lived in or near Belding since. For 54 years he lived on the same farm a mile and a half northwest of Belding. He was a carpenter by trade and helped to build most of Belding’s oldest buildings. He also helped build the first railroad into Belding from Ionia. He was a member of the Belding post GAR and a member of the IOOF. Funeral services were held at the Fitzjohn funeral home Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock with burial at Belding cemetery. He leaves his widow, one son, Herbert, of Belding. Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary Sunday November 4.
