He was the son of Russell Goodemoot of Odessa township and had lived at home on the farm until his country called home to her colors. To this call he willingly responded though naturally averse to war. Hugh was a strong, health boy. He never was seriously sick until he was taken with influenza in October. He was in the Book hospital about three weeks and then returned to his duties. He still had trouble that developed into mastoid affection which required an operation. After the first operation he got around in reasonable time but complications set in until he was upon the operating table three times and from the last never returned consciousness. He bore all with patience and Christian fortitude. He was a member of the South Berlin M.E. church and lived an exemplary Christian life. He gave his heart to God, his name to the church and his life to his country. All was done that medical science and surgery could do, but to no avail. His loved ones will miss him so much and the community will miss him. Yet humble submission to the Divine providence whose wisdom and ways are past finding out. The funeral was held last Friday afternoon at the M.E. church and was largely attended by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. It was military in accordance with is service, eight or ten returned soldiers being present. the sermon was by the Rev. D.D. King and a quartette composed of Messrs. Wm. and Leon Gilson, George Kart and Merlin Morgan sang. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery. Written in memory of Hugh Goodemoot: It was not his to cross the seas, In deadly combat to engage, On foreign battlefield. 'Twas his, his country' call to heed, To face the foe if such the need, And thus his young life yield. He bade farewell to home and kin, To give his all that right might win. Prepared to pay the price. And meeting death where duty lay, That grim foe no man's hand can stay, He made the sacrifice. He has gone with those who will ne'er return, For them sad hearts must ever yearn. 'Tis ours to grieve and give. But there'll be a great "reveille" morn. Uniting hearts asunder torn. Ever in peace to live.
