October 16, 1947 MRS. GOODEMOOT, OWNER OF THE WAVE DIED WEDNESDAY Mrs. L.Alberta Dann-Goodemoot, 79, an owner and publisher of The Lake Odessa Wave since 1900 died at Butterworth hospital in Grand Rapids Wednesday from an entirely unexpected post-operative cerebral thrombosis followed by pneumonia. Her operation, mentioned in The Wave, last week, was considered of non-serious nature but apparently her age milliard against recovery. She had been a patient sufferer from the extremely painful affliction for eight or 10 years, and it was anticipated the surgery would bring her a measure of relief in her declining years. Survivors are two children Stanley W.Dann and Mrs.William C.Tietz, Lake Odessa; a brother. Elroy A. Smith, Wayland; three grandchildren, Miss Donna I Tietz, Kansas City, MO; Mrs Arthur F. Hinman of Willow Village, Mich., and William S.Tietz, Grand Haven, and one great grandson; five step-children, Donald Goodemoot, Lake Odessa; Kenneth G. Pittsburgh,Pa.; Russell at Glendale,Calif.; Mrs.John Justjo, Detroit, and Dale D., Greenville; several step-grandchildren, and a foster sister Mrs. Glenn Herrington in Grand Rapids. Mrs. Goodemoot will repose at the Pickens Funeral Home until 11 Friday when she will be taken to Central Methodist church where funeral services will be held at 2. Dr.Victor W.Thrall, pastor will officiate. Interment will be in Lakeside cemetery. Bearers will be Matt M.Armstrong, Howard Burbank, Leon T.Gilson, Royal C. and Frank Johnson ad Walter Tasker, who went to school with her 45 years ago. Mother had been an attendant at Divine services and active in all departments of church work for about 70 years becoming a member of Central church when she and father moved here in 1901. She was an honorary life member of the WSCS, was a past matron of the OES, past grand of the Rebekahs, past president of the Woman's club and of the WCTU, and was a former trustee of the village. At one time some 30 or 35 years ago she had been president of the county WXTU and the old fifth district WCTU for several years. Daughter of Allegan county pioneers, she had known the privations of pioneer life. She had taught school for nearly 20 years in Allegan, Mecosta and Ionia counties, the last nine, from 1901 to 1910, at Lake Odessa. She began teaching school at age 16 when teachers of country schools still "boarded around" among the patrons. For many years she has painted with oils as a hobby and gave many of her works to friends. Following mother's 75th birthday we published a poem entitled "The Editor's 75th Birthday" the concluding verse of which we feel is quite fitting at this time; When I get old, if e're I do, I ain't agoing to die; I'll take a long-lease residence in a mansion in the sky Where I can watch the friends I've left And guide them o'er life's sea, So when they're old and want to quit, They'll find a home with me Additional Comments: Lakeside Cem.#8-952-2 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/g/goodemoo42632nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 3.6 Kb
