Gooding saddened the hearts of many of our citizens on hearing of his demise Friday morning although the change had not been unexpected for a number of weeks. His last sickness confined him to the house about eleven weeks, the disease which affected him being of such a nature that it would not yield to treatment and he gradually grew worse. The deceased was a grand old man in every sense of the word, respected by all who knew him. He had lived here 36 years occupying his late home during that time. The funeral was held there Sunday at 2 o’clock and was largely attended by old neighbors and friends, Rev. N. J. Myers officiating and gave a beautiful discourse on “Immortality”. Mrs. J. F. Ferguson, Miss Marie Stall and Miss Florence Foster sang. The bearers who bore the remains to River Ridge Cemetery under direction of Ben F_____were C. M. Wise, F. A. Washburn, H. J. Leonard, C. G. O’Bryan, F. R. Spencer and Edward Lamb. The casket was ______________with many beautiful flowers. Horace H Gooding son of Hiram and Eunice Gooding was born in East Bloomfield, N. Y. January 22, 1827. Died at Belding, Mich., February 21, 1908 after a lingering illness of three months. He was 84 years and 1 month old. When he was seven years of age his parents moved to Westfield, Medina Co., N. Y. He worked on the farm with his father until he was eighteen years of age. From then until he was twenty-one he was employed as a clerk in the village store. He was married to Elizabeth L. Morgan in 1848 but __________was of short duration as she passed over the river April 2, 1849. April 15, 1850 he with five others, his father being one of the party started with an ox team by the “Overland Route” to California, where they arrived Sept. 19 of the same year. There the party separated, he and his father remaining together. His father was soon taken sick by exposure and disease contracted on the long journey and died Oct. 28, 1850. Although a young man and left along among strangers and in a strange land, his perseverance and indomitable will carried him safely through those periless times. After following various occupations among them mining sometimes meeting with success, sometimes with reverses, he again returned to his native state in the Autumn of 1853. In the spring of 1854 he with his brother R. B. Gooding engaged in farming, which pursuit he followed while he lived in the home town. Jan. 27, 1857 he married Lovina Ophelia Marble, of this union two children were born, Carrie Elizabeth Brink who passed on Jan. 12, 1894 and Eva Louise Allgeo of this place. In the spring of 1872 he and his family moved to Belding, where he engaged in the lumber business and with his brother R. B. Gooding and nephew R. John Gooding built the Planing Mill and operated the same for about twenty years, since which time he engaged in the Nursery business. He was the eldest of eleven children, the only survivors being: Z. W. Gooding, Belding, Mich, Mrs. H. H. Reed, Honeoye, N. Y., Mrs. Anna Mason, Sennett, N. Y. He also leaves one grandson, Lawrence Gooding Blystone of Correy, Pa. He was an affectionate husband, a loving father and a genial neighbor, his one great consolation at the last was the thought that among his large circle of acquaintances, made during a long and eventful life, he could honestly say he had not an enemy. Though not a member of any church he was a firm believer in the universal salvation of all souls. Card of thanks: We desire to express our thanks and appreciation to all those who assisted in any way during the illness and burial of our loved one and to those who contributed the beautiful floral offerings.
