The remains were brought to Portland on the 10:48 train Monday morning, and were met by many of the former friends and acquaintances of the deceased. The remains were taken to the Universalist church where a short service was held, the pastor making a short but highly appropriate address to the sorrowing relatives and friends. The body was interred in our village cemetery. Thirty years ago James Gorton was the pastor of the Universalist church here, and at one time was principal of our schools. The maiden name of his wife, the deceased, was Hitchcock, and she was a sister of T. J. Hitchcock and Mr. Isaac M. Tyler, of Portland. Mrs. Gorton’s girlhood was passed in Portland, and here she was wed. It was fitting that she should be laid at rest among the scenes of her youth. Since leaving Portland the deceased had resided in various places, the calling of her husband making this necessary. For several years they were located at Charlotte, where Mr. Gorton held the pastorate of the Universalist church. The deceased was a consistent Christian lady and is well remembered here for the womanly virtues that endeared her to all those with whom she came in contact.
