Goss will be pained to know of his death the past week in California where he had gone with the hope that he might overcome the disease that had become deeply rooted. The telegram announcing his death was received in Grand Rapids Monday. His age was 52 years. He died at Alta Dena, California. The end was peaceful and came after eight months suffering. The remains will be cremated in California and the ashes will be shipped to Michigan for burial. He was well and favorably known in Ionia, and during his residence here won the high regard of all for his good qualities. He took an active part in politics, both before and after leaving here, and his last visits to Ionia were often in the pursuance of political work. He was before he graduated a prominent figure in the local schools. Mr. Goss went to California in September 1907 in search of relief from lung trouble, and has since then made his home in Alta Dena, at the foot of Mr. Lowe. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Josephine Goss, two children, Faith and Henry Goss, and his aged father, Sidney Goss. Dwight Goss was born in Portage county, Ohio, February 18, 1857. He attended school in Portage county until 10 years of age when he came with his parents to Clinton county, Mich. He was graduated from the Ionia high school in 1879, and a year later he entered the literary department of the University of Michigan. After two years of study in this department he took a course of law in the same institution. Following his completion of the law course at the university, Mr. Goss went to Grand Rapids and entered the office of Smiley & Earle as clerk. In 1886 he was admitted to the bar, and in January 1887 commenced the practice of the profession, in which he continued until driven by failing health to retire from active business. He was appointed assistant United States attorney for the western district of Michigan in May (illegible) and filled that position until the spring of 1902. Mr. Goss was a member of Doric lodge No. 324, F.&A.M. and of De Molai commandery Knights Templar. One of the last works performed by Mr. Goss before the breaking of his health was the compilation of a history of Grand Rapids.
