The Ionia Daily Sentinel, Tuesday, May 10, 1881

The death of David C. Gould, of Ionia township which occurred on Thursday of 
last week, calls forth expressions of sorrow and sympathy from a large circle 
of relatives and friends.  His kindness of heart and gentleness of disposition 
endeared him to all who enjoyed his acquaintance.  In every relation of life 
was the exemplary citizen, kind husband and father.  

Mr. Gould was born in Canandaigua, Ontario, N.Y., in 1820; removed to the 
township of Girard, Branch Co., Mich. in 1840.  He moved to Coldwater in 1854, 
from which place he came to Ionia in 1870.  During his eleven year’s residence 
in this county by his honesty and uprightness in all his dealings with his 
fellow men he had gained their respect and esteem.

Among the last statements of Mr. Gould he stated that he had never had a 
lawsuit; had never taken the name of God in vain; had never called any man a 
liar or had been so-called.  Yet he subscribed to no church creed but was a 
firm believer in the doctrine taught by Christ: “Do unto others as ye would 
that others should do unto you.”

His illness was long and painful, yet he bore it with patient submission, 
calmly waiting for the summons: “Come, thou good and faithful servant.”

His home was his life, and he was the magnet that drew all hearts to its 
center.  An affectionate husband, a loving father, and a good citizen, his 
death was deeply regretted.  The community in which he lived share in the 
bereavement of the afflicted family.
