Nov. 30, 2016 DOUGLAS RONALD GOWARD 1949-2016 On Nov. 26, 2016, at age 67, Doug passed away at Heartland Health Care Center of Ionia from diabetic complications with family at his side. Doug was born on Feb. 28, 1949, the son of Daniel and Lilah (Chartrand) Goward. Doug graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1967. In 1969 he was drafter into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Stationed for 18 months in South Korea, Doug served in a military police unit. On Dec. 29, 1978, he married Susan Grace Hite in Alma. Together they raised three children, including a son from Susan's previous marriage. Doug worked manual labor jobs in his 35 years living in Mancelona. They included 10 years as a custodian at Mancelona High School. He enjoyed playing euchre, hunting, wood-working, and shooting his firearms. Doug is survived by his children and children-in-law April Norcross (Goward) and Jamie Norcross of Ionia, Faith Mulholland (Goward) of Traverse City and Michael Glinke and Mickie Ward of Warren; three grandsons and five granddaughters; his sister Diane Hudecek of Sault Ste. Marie, sister-in-law Marsha Goward of Chesaning; sisters and brothers-in-law Laura (Guy) Wonsitler of Midland, Patricia (John) Earegood of Alma, and Stephanie (Tony) Griffith of Carlton; brothers and sister-in-law David (Beth) Hite of Wheeler, Kevin (Cheryl) Hite of Bellaire, and Michael Hite of Midland; and numerous nieces and nephews. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Lilah Goward; brother-in-law Paul Hite of Midland; wife Susan Goward; and brother Richard Goward of Chesaning. A private celebration of life will take place when his ashes are spread with Susan's later. Arrangements were made by Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home, our family serving yours.
