GRAFF BORN IN GERMANY, CAME TO IONIA IN 1868 AND LIVED A QUIET, CHRISTIAN LIFE Mrs. Christine Graff, esteemed resident of Ionia, who died at the family home last Thursday morning, and will be laid to rest Sunday, was born in Wurttemberg, Germany, Feb. 3, 1844. She came to this country in her youth and for some time made her home with an aunt in Leroy, New York. In 1868 she came to Ionia, where she married Frederick Graff. Six children were born to them, three of whom died in infancy. Besides her husband she leaves a daughter Louise M., who has been with her constantly since June, and two sons, Charles F. Graff of Orleans, and Herbert Graff of Washington, D.C., to mourn her loss. Mrs. Graff was in fairly good health until five years ago when she suffered a paralytic stroke which left her helpless for many weeks and an invalid for the rest of her life. Two years later she suffered another stroke which seriously affected her hearing. Succeeding attacks followed but through it all she suffered patiently and uncomplainingly until the end, which came at 4:15 Thursday morning, November 22, 1917. (page #3 - Nov. 24, 1917) Herbert Graff arrived last evening from Washington, D.C., called here by the death of his mother, Mrs. Frederick Graff. Mr. Graff is an Ionia boy who has made good since leaving the old home. He was for several years in the forestry department work in the west, and later went to Washington where he is now in the market department, having to do with the Hooverizing of the food question. Washington , he says, has taken on 50,000 additional population this year. It is almost impossible to get street car or housing accommodations, and there is congestion everywhere. "Even in the great capitol of the United States," says Mr. Graff. "(unreadable line) products and supplies for every day living is felt. There is an absolute famine in sugar, salt and matches in Washington at this time. You can get neither of these articles." Mr. Graff will be in Ionia for several days before returning home.
