And what an intense scene it was! There were caskets of spotless white, caskets of softest gray, and caskets of sombrous black. There was blended grief and hope; there was the beauty of banks of flowers, and there was evidence that was a solemn admonition to all mankind. Can you contemplate the picture? Pastor B. H. Succop rightfully invoked assistance in administering these last sad rites to this group of five of his faithful parishioners, and aiding him was the Rev. Otto Boecler of the Emanuel Lutheran church of Grand Rapids, who delivered a discourse in the English tongue, basing it upon Hebrews, 12:11. Fearful as the awful tragedy was that snuffed out these lives, the direct result of the mistake of one human being, illustrating human fallibility, yet the preacher found comfort and consolation even in this crisis, in the fact that the disposition of it all by the good Godhead, will be merciful and wise. “The Lord hath given, the Lord hath taken away.” Following was a discourse in the German language by Pastor Succop, in which the lives and Christian life work of these dead of his church family was taken more particularly into the account. His text was based on 1 Peter, 5. 6:8. The funeral procession was most imposing, both in its character and size. It was headed by a marching line made up of representations of the Elks, Knights of Columbus, P.M. Shopmen, and Lutheran Benevolent therein. Those in vehicles could be computed by hundreds. The carriers were: For Charles Hass—Charles Holtz, Frederick Hass, Fred Bilow, Godfrey Wendland. For Paul Hass—Charles Ammon, Peter Diehm, Herman Doebbert, M. Dreger. For Herman Hass—Emile Hahn, Chas. Heiden, Frank Schipper, Emil Hass. For Mrs. Richter—August Heiden, Louis Tafel, William Warnke, Louis Melzow. For William Grams—Robert Tafel, Henry Storch; John Steele. Card of Thanks: We appreciate full the many kindly acts of neighbors and friends for our son and brother, William Grams. We thank you all, very much.
