Grant, aged 22 years. This simple announcement will cause universal sadness in this community, where deceased was known only to be loved. Her illness was of short duration, she having caught a severe cold six weeks ago while engaged at her work in Grand Rapids, which developed into a case of incipient tuberculosis, from which, through a course of treatment, she continued to improve until two days prior to her death when she suffered a grave and acute attack of peritonitis, resulting in her death at about 10 o’clock Sunday night. Nellie Grant was born at Watson, Allegan county, July 19, 1881, her parents removing to Mancelona a year later, where they remained until June, 1890, when they moved to Lyons, where her mother passed away in 1893, since which Nellie has been the constant care of a loving father. In 1898 she graduated from the Lyons High School and in 1902 from the business department of the Albion College. She was a member of the Grace Episcopal church of Lyons, and ever active in every good work, bringing sunshine and gladness into every circle in which she moved. In June, 1903, deceased took a position in Grand Rapids as stenographer, resigning on account of illness. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the home, Rev. Mr. Morgan of the Episcopal church officiating in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends, all of whom sincerely mourned the death of one who was dear and near to them. The pall-bearers were Messrs. V.F. Upton, Walter Vanderbilt, Ralph McQuillin and W. Buchanan, the honorary ones being Daisy Sunderlin, of Ionia, Bessie Morse, Katherine Maginn and Maud Halsted, young lady friends of deceased. The W.R.C., of which Mrs. W.R. Grant is a member, attended in a body, as did the young lady friends of Nellie. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Those present from out of town were: John Grant, father, Rev. Mrs. Woodward, of Dutton, and Mrs. Frank Wynne, of Watson, sisters of Dr. Grant, Mrs. Dr. Albright and Hugh MacDougall, of Allegan, sister and brother of the mother of deceased, Miss Mildred Garrison, of Kalamazoo, Mrs. Mable Patterson, of Perry, Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Handy, of Lansing, Mrs. W.R. Marshall, of Saginaw, Gertrude Zank and Daisy Sunderlin, of Ionia, Bessie Morse, of Grand Rapids. The eternal parting of loved ones is always sad, but inexpressibly so is the death of a young person whose feet have just commenced to travel life’s highway and to whom the future is bright with promise. Nellie Grant, in her brief life of 22 years, had brought sunshine into the home and into the lives of her friends and her death causes universal sorrow. She has gone to join her mother in a brighter and better home, leaving behind her the memory of a pure and noble life. She leaves a father and brother, who have the sympathy of this community.
