June 21, 2016 GARY DEAN GRANT 1938-2016 Gary Dean Grant, 77, of Belding, died at home Thursday afternoon, June 16, 2016 surrounded by his loving family and Hospice. Gary was born on Oct. 20, 1938 in Cheboygan, the son of Ray and Alice Grant. Gary excelled in sports during his high school career at Melvindale High school, athletic passions that he continued throughout his life. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army and was deployed to Colorado. When his military obligations were over, Gary was employed as a drug representative and a basketball coach at SS. Peter and Paul in Ionia. He attended Central Michigan University, earning a Bachelor's degree in Social work and worked for the department of Social Services in Ionia for 30 years. Gary married colleen Prendergast on Sept. 25, 1965 and she preceded him in death in 2014. He was also preceded by his parents and siblings, Jim and Lee Ann. The family resided in Belding where they owned and operated the Grand Family Restaurant. Gary Also sold real estate. Gary loved to compete in sport and played tennis until shortly before his death. He also loved to spend time at the family cottage at Long lake where he enjoyed fishing, boating and working around the cottage. Most mornings Gary could be found at the coffee shop with his cronies sharing coffee and donuts and solving all the problems of the world. Gary is loved and survived by his four children; Kevin Grant of Belding, Kelly (Angie Gonzales) Simmons of Sinking Spring, PA, Molly (Art) Ward of Rockford and Brian Grant of Holland. He took great joy in his grandchildren and their pursuits; Allison (Dylan) Fischer, Zachary and Jared Simmons, Katelynn, Mitchell and Jack Ward and Lauren Grant. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Martha (Gust) Triantafillou, Patty (Allan King) Prendergast and Rita (Dutch) Bouwman; and several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Belding, with Father Mark Bauer Presiding. Visitation will be Monday 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding.
