Was County Clerk, Dentist Here; Dies in New York Is Word Received. Left Shire Years Ago. Born in Portland, Spent Last Days Roaming. News of the death of Dr. John J. Green reached Ionia last week in the form of a telephone call from New York City, where, it is presumed, he had been residing of late. It was sent to Sheriff Wm. (Moon) Franch and asked for addresses of Dr. Green’s daughters. During his illness he had requested that they be notified in case of his death. Undersheriff Henry Cook located one of the daughters in Lansing and notified her of her father’s death. Dr. Green was born near Portland about 59 years ago. While attending school here he was employed nights and mornings by Dr. R. W. Alton, part of his work being to take care for the horses. Dr. Alton took much interest in the young man and induced him to take a college course after he finished in Portland. This he did, entering the dental department of the U. of M. After graduating he returned to Portland, opened an office and worked up a good practice. Election Unfortunate It was an unlucky day for Dr. Green when in 1896 a group of democrats chose him as the democratic candidate for county clerk. The democrats had not elected a man on their ticket for years and when Dr. Green was nominated it was looked upon more as an honor than a serious effort to elect. The unexpected happened, Bryan and free silver changed the political map of the whole country that fall. All of the nominees of the county ticket were elected, Dr. Green receiving a majority of 140. The following January Dr. Green assumed his new duties in the clerk’s office. Seemingly from that very moment he began his campaign for reelection in 1898. He was free with his money and it was generally believed that he spent more than his salary amounted to. He was renominated in ’98 but with all the other democrats went down to defeat. Meanwhile he had established a dental business in Ionia, but it was not long before he seemed to lose interest in his work. Things went from bad to worse and eventually Dr. Green left Ionia. He has been heard from only a few times since. His letters indicated he was moving about considerably but gave little information as to what he was doing. It had been a long time since his Ionia friends had heard from him, and it was generally supposed that he died some time ago. Owned Farm Here. Dr. Green’s wife was formerly Genevra Welker, daughter of Hamilton Welker, who was sheriff of this county. Two daughters were born, Gertrude and Lenna. Gertrude is married and lived in Cincinnati, while Lenna works in Lansing. Mrs. Green was granted a divorce before her husband left Ionia. She is now an Osteopath physician at Petoskey. Dr. Green at one time owned what is now Will A. Young’s farm, Shuart’s corners, on US-16. He was a likeable fellow, back in the old days, and made friends easily. His mother, Mrs. Sarah Green, died a few years ago. Rollo E. Green, a brother, resides in Hastings, and a married sister, Katherine, in the West. Portland Review.
